Job hunting Rule 19: Adapting to a Japanese company

Sometimes American students majoring in Japanese ask, “I’d like to know about what kind of competencies I need to fit in at a Japanese company.” So, I’d like to talk about what you should keep in mind to survive in a Japanese company facing an environment different from the one in which you were born and raised.

In Japanese companies both in Japan and in America, it is very important to try to understand Japanese culture and customs with a positive attitude, as well as to maintain a spirit of teamwork and cooperation with everyone.

In Japanese companies, teamwork is particularly important. In addition, when the situation requires, it is important to maintain flexibility and able able to adapt to different circumstances without giving up. It is easy to simply quit, but it will take a little time to enjoy your work, especially if you are joining the company as a new graduate. Since it is common that new employees need to learn many things, please make an effort to patiently listen to advice from people around you.
